The memorial from Zhaozhou stated: The relics arrived in the prefecture on the fourth day of the third month. Your ministers and others enshrined them and erected a pagoda at the Wenji Temple in the seat of administration. On the second day, when raising the mast and circumambulating, the relics emitted red light at the pagoda site. From the hour of the Sheep to the Monkey [1:00–5:00 p.m.], even more different sights were seen: sometimes resembling an image, sometimes resembling a multistoried pavilion; sometimes white light was seen, now large, now small, circling the relics and circumambulating the bottle, now concealed, now manifest, now slow, now fast. Among the officials, clergy, and laity, none failed to witness it; with startled joy and choked sobs, excitement surged through the temple. On the fourth day, it again emitted red light, shining like a golden colour, more than a foot in extent, alternating with purple and green three times in total, extinguishing only after a long while. Furthermore, a Buddha image more than two feet tall was seen, sitting cross-legged upon a lotus, and also flanked by two bodhisattvas more than a foot tall. From the hour of the Rabbit to the Snake [5:00–11:00 a.m.], various forms were seen; more than twenty thousand of the fourfold assembly, clergy and laity, all looked up in reverence.
