The memorial from Songzhou stated: On the fourth day of the third month, the relics arrived in the prefecture. In the market quarter of Songcheng County under its jurisdiction, there was formerly an old well pit whose water had always been salty, bitter, and reddish in colour, completely undrinkable. A commoner of that county, Hu Ziqian, took water from it to mix mud, and marvelled that its colour had turned white; tasting it, he found it extremely sweet. On the third day of the fourth month, the relics emitted red light inside the pagoda. At the fifth watch [3:00–5:00 a.m.] on the night of the sixth day, white light was emitted again inside the temple. At the hour of the Dragon [7:00–9:00 a.m.] on the seventh day, heaven rained white flowers inside the temple, visible to the eyes as swirling and falling like fine snow, yet not dropping onto the ground. At noon on the eighth day, when the relics were about to be lowered into the casket, white cranes soared above the foundation of the pagoda in the sky.
