The memorial from Huaizhou stated: The relics were enshrined in Changshou Temple in the prefectural city. At the hour of the Dragon [7:00–9:00 a.m.] on the fifth day of the fourth month, a male pheasant flew beside the casket; tranquil and composed in spirit, its plumage was vivid and splendid, flying and perching on its own without the slightest fear. Yang Mai, a commoner of Henan County, specially pointed it out, and of the more than six thousand clergy and laity, none failed to see it together. The imperially dispatched śramaṇa Lingcan then conferred the precepts upon it; the pheasant faced the master as if listening to the Dharma. The master said: 'This pheasant is a wild bird; the principles of the inner Dharma brook no cage or tether.' He then ordered that it be sent to Mount Taihang north of the city and released. On the side of the relic pagoda, there was also a track coming from thirty paces southeast of the pagoda, going straight to the site of the pagoda without any returning trace seen, nor any point of entry; sometimes four inches wide, sometimes three inches wide, coiling and winding like the track of a dragon or snake. Palace attendants, clergy, and laity all saw it together. Before noon on the eighth day, when the relics were about to enter the pagoda casket, light was emitted outside the bottle, circling several times in radiant, brilliant splendour, now moving up, now moving down, now hiding, now appearing.
