The question asks: When teaching serves as function and defilements are subdued, how are they subdued? If one has not seen principle at all and single-mindedly believes in darkness, while one is single-minded there is only faith. If this is called the subduing of defilements, it is merely that thoughts cannot run concurrently: doing this means abandoning that. It is not that weighing principle against defilements can cause defilements to be subdued. Among all mental factors, which is not like this? Subduing such as this has not altered the root. Leaning now to one side, now subdued, the cycle is endless. Even if it lasts longer and longer, how could defilements ever be eradicated?
