治素無才學性不聰敏。內典諸文殊未觀覽。所作論序鄙拙尤繁。忽見來書褒揚讚述撫躬自省慚悚交并。勞師遠臻深以為愧。

Zhi has always lacked talent and learning, and my nature is not bright or sharp. In the various writings of the Buddhist scriptures, I have scarcely read at all. The preface to the treatise that I composed was particularly unpolished, crude, and verbose. Suddenly seeing your letter of praise, exposition, and acclaim, I look inward, reflecting upon myself with mixed feelings of shame and dread. That the Master has taken the trouble to send this from afar makes me feel deeply ashamed.
