問若爾迦葉那得語阿難道。佛從何處說法。至涅槃時集修多羅藏。語優波離道佛從何處說法。至涅槃時集毘尼藏。云何得言唯取前四時不取涅槃。答涅槃時不復制戒。

[The Emperor] asked: "If so, how could Kāśyapa tell Ānanda: 'From where the Buddha preached the Dharma down to the time of nirvāṇa, compile the Sūtrapiṭaka,' and tell Upāli: 'From where the Buddha preached the Dharma down to the time of nirvāṇa, compile the Vinayapiṭaka'? How can you say he only took the previous four periods and did not take the nirvāṇa?" [Dao'en] replied: "At the time of the nirvāṇa, he no longer laid down precepts."
