問涅槃云。夫食肉者斷大慈種。我從今日制諸弟子。不得復食一切肉。一切悉斷及自死者。如此制斷。是戒非戒。道恩不復奉答。

[The Emperor] asked: "The Mahāparinirvāṇa-sūtra states: 'Those who eat meat cut off the seed of great compassion. From this day forward, I enjoin my disciples that they may no longer eat any meat; all meat is prohibited, including that of animals dying of themselves.' Is such a prescriptive prohibition a precept or not a precept?" Dao'en did not reply further.
