[The Emperor] asked: "To profess shame and remorse first and yet still consume it is to transgress knowingly, which cannot be called shame and remorse. If one did not know beforehand, or if it was an error, and remorse arises afterward, that is true shame and remorse. Is not transgressing knowingly a greater sin than doing so out of ignorance? Furthermore, with shame and remorse one must not repeat the offense; if one repeats the offense, it again violates one's original intention. In terms of sin, this is why it is all the greater." [Fachong] replied: "The sūtra has an explicit statement: Jīvaka said, 'Because you have shame and remorse, your sin can be eliminated.' Shame and remorse are pure and wholesome dharmas."
