問法師是得經言不得其意此明。若作罪後方知慚愧。此為白法。不言發初慚愧而故作罪。以為白法。答經又道慚愧為上服。若爾便有非上服義。

[The Emperor] asked: "The Dharma master grasps the words of the sūtra but does not grasp its meaning. It clarifies that if, after committing a sin, one only then realizes shame and remorse, this is a wholesome dharma; it does not say that feeling shame and remorse initially and knowingly committing a sin is a wholesome dharma." [Fachong] replied: "The sūtra also says that shame and remorse are the supreme garment; if so, then there is the sense of not being the supreme garment."
