The gentleman of the Confucian school stays far from the kitchen; seeing them alive, he cannot bear their death; hearing their cries, he does not eat their meat. Gao Chai and Zheshang, without knowing the inner teachings [of Buddhism], were both able to refrain from killing. These are all the natural inclinations of benevolent people. Among conscious creatures, none does not cherish life; one must diligently practice the cessation of killing. The retributions and manifestations witnessed when those fond of killing approach death, and the calamities suffered by their descendants, are exceedingly numerous, and cannot all be recorded. Here, a few cases are merely presented at the end.
