to be like this. Therefore he encouraged, admonished, and spurred them on to practice and learn. Thus a sūtra says: 'We have heard that the śramaṇa's practice of the Way means abandoning household, wife, and children, casting away love and desire, cutting off the six emotions, keeping the precepts, and abiding in asaṃskṛta. When the mind is purified and one-pointed, the myriad evils are extinguished. In the path of the one-pointed mind, sights and sounds cannot defile it, glory and rank cannot move it; free from grief and suffering, one has mastery over existence and demise, standing aloof and solitary, abandoning the five defilements, removing the two impurities, the two tight bonds, the two obstructing dharmas, the two kinds of stains, the two hailstorms, the two carbuncles, the two burning dharmas, and the two kinds of illnesses.' The four who break the precepts are: first, those whose three karmas are impure; second, those who fear upon hearing of emptiness; third, those who do not act for the sake of Nirvāṇa; fourth, those who are greedily attached to the view of self. Furthermore, as a sūtra says: 'A bodhisattva cultivating practice must first remove four faults: casting aside deceit, esteeming the repayment of kindness, resolving doubts and suspicions, and extinguishing flattering thoughts. In this way, fully practicing the sublime deeds of the perfections, he is pure, vast, and securely abides in quiescence.'
