若謂妻子眷屬為樂者。則應長相歌笑。何意俄爾無常悲號。哽噎當知眷屬實是苦本。若謂妙色以為樂者。則應長悅心目永慰形骸。何意須臾顏貌變改髮白面黑傷痛少年華美之艶。故知此色本自是苦。不是外來。

If one considers wives, children, and kin to be joy, then one should sing and laugh together forever; why is it that impermanence suddenly brings mournful wailing and choking sobs? One should know that kin are truly the root of suffering. If one considers sublime physical form to be joy, then it should perpetually delight the heart and eyes, eternally comforting the physical frame; why is it that in an instant one's appearance changes, the hair turns white, the face turns black, mourning the lush beauty of youth? Thus we know that this form is fundamentally suffering of itself, not something arriving from outside.
