Regarding 'dedication', non-attachment is its meaning. As for all sentient beings who fully cultivate myriad practices, relinquishing their bodies, lives, and wealth, the reason they fail to attain liberation from birth and death is entirely that they are addicted and attached to the fruits of retribution, unable to relinquish them. If they can keep their minds unattached, cultivate and encompass deliverance, and wherever there is a slight merit, dedicate and bestow it upon all beings toward the Buddha Path, then they will no longer generate attachment to retributions, and will effortlessly attain liberation from birth and death. Hence a sūtra says: 'Cultivating practice according to what is expounded, dedication brings great benefit.' Therefore, all wholesome karma performed should be dedicated, and sentient beings should likewise be encouraged not to be attached to fruits of retribution. Why? This physical form itself is the root of retribution; nourished, fed, adorned, and embellished all day long, it must inevitably die, making preservation and attachment futile. Unless one is foolish and benighted, why covet and love this body? If one has even a little wisdom, how could one not weary of it at all times? Therefore the wise tap their chests and examine their minds, brooking no greed or attachment that would turn them back into the flow of birth and death.
