江令集云。廬山遠法師未出家。善弩射。嘗於鶴窟射得鶴雛。後復伺鶴母。見將射之鶴不動。詳觀之已死於窠中。疑其愛子致死。破視心腸皆寸絕。法師於是放弩。發菩提心。

The Collected Works of Prefect Jiang states: Before Dharma Master Yuan of Mount Lu went forth from home, he was skilled with the crossbow. He once shot and captured a crane chick at Crane Cave. Later, he waited for the mother crane again, and saw that the crane he was about to shoot did not move. Looking closely at her, she was already dead in her nest. Suspecting that her love for her offspring had brought about her death, he cut her open and saw that her heart and intestines were severed into inches. Thereupon, the Dharma Master cast down his crossbow and gave rise to the aspiration for bodhi.
