The Laozi Melting Ice Scripture says: Laozi told Yin Xi, “If you seek to study the Dao, first eliminate the five emotions: first, father and mother; second, wife and children; third, lust and beauty; fourth, wealth and treasures; fifth, official rank. If you eliminate them, you may go west with me.” Yin Xi, being fierce and sharp, immediately severed the heads of seven people and brought them. Laozi laughed and said: “I was merely testing your heart; this cannot be done. Those you killed were not your relatives, but merely birds and beasts.” Prostrating to look, the seven heads were the seven treasures, and the seven corpses were seven beasts. Yin Xi was suspicious and returned home; all seven relatives were still alive. Furthermore, the Record of the Creation of Heaven and Earth says: “When Laozi converted the barbarians, the barbarian king would not submit; Laozi struck and killed the barbarian king’s seven sons and one portion of his countrymen.”
