Your subject laughs and says: The Precepts of the Three Primes states: ‘Those who study the Dao must not harbor an evil mind, be unfilial to parents, or lack love for wife and children.’ Calculating Yin Xi's slaying of his parents: if he knew it was an illusion, why did he harbor doubt and return to see? If he did so with a sincere mind, according to the precepts, harboring evil was already committing a grave transgression, how much more so severing the heads of both his parents! Furthermore, because the barbarian king would not submit, he killed his seven sons—this was already extreme; moreover, he killed a portion of the countrymen—how deeply unbenevolent is this! If this were made a model for later generations, it would cause all seekers of the Dao to kill their two parents, wives, and children. Furthermore, can one, merely because a single king did not submit, indiscriminately execute half the people of a country? Advancing or retreating, in all these regards, it is laughable and bizarre!
