What sages and philosophers value is filial piety; what the benevolent cherish is their parents. In Our youth We received the kindness of nurturing; grown up, We were graced with the instructions of upbringing. How could the sorrow of the Southern Hills ever be forgotten? For kindness as boundless as vast Heaven, there is no way to repay. Formerly, Zilu lamented not being able to nourish his parents with a thousand bushels of grain, and Yuqiu grieved that his two parents would not wait. Our heart is bewildered; truly it is lamentable! We constantly grieve that within a single month We twice met with harrowing sorrow. Uttering these words, Our eternal longing and acute grief pierce the depths of Our heart. Wishing to repay without means, We solely rely on unseen assistance. Reverently offering two hundred bolts of silk to the Great Way of Compassion, if utmost sincerity can move [the spirits], We hope to extinguish past faults; and since doing good has its cause, may she obtain the blessings of future conditions.
