These are all the ghostly methods of the Three Zhangs; how could they be what Laozi harbored? From antiquity down to the Fu and Yao regimes, all Buddhist monks were called "Daoshi" (masters of the Dao). Only with Kou Qianzhi was the title of Daoshi first usurped, secretly changing the designation of Jijiu ("libationer"). The matter is recorded in the books of the Yao dynasty and can be examined in brief. Now, as for the Faxing jing, no one translated it; though it falls into the category of doubtful texts, it does not harm the grand purport. Mahākāśyapa was a disciple of Śākyamuni, who received the Dao and expounded the teachings; how could he wish to stand shoulder to shoulder with the talismans and registers of the Three Zhangs? Falsely imputing their views to the words of Laozi and gathering deceptive phrases to bolster each other, they again cite true discourses to substantiate their empty assertions. Alas, how lamentable! May you scrutinize this deeply.
