In the first year of the Longshuo era of the Great Tang, made by Guo Xingzhen, Daoist priest of Xihua Abbey in the capital and Court Gentleman for Miscellaneous Duties: Reflecting that I was born into humble ranks, yet suddenly mingled in the court ranks, expanded with generous courtesies and respected as a lineage master, such honored reputation truly had its cause. Although I belong to the yellow caps, my mind dwells on mysterious transformation. Investigating heterodox declarations, the Buddha is the father of the Dao; yet later students, deluded in life, falsely maintain rivalry, comparing persons in their peerage, which is truly hard to equate. Furthermore, the Buddha is the Dharmarāja, while the Daoist is called the Archivist beneath the Pillar. The Buddha displayed a golden complexion, showing the wonders of the thirty-two marks; the Daoist manifested a white head and a nose with the peculiarity of dual columns. His fame and radiance are not heard among ordinary folks; Daluo is merely talk of nonexistence; his supernatural powers have not transformed the sentiments of beings; the Jade Capital was originally a baseless account. Therefore, I take refuge in the Utmost Enlightenment, leaving my devotion to scriptures and images to be transmitted in this world of retreat. To those flowing afar and not yet awakened, may the One Vehicle and the One Way constantly effect transformation in Great Harmony, and the nine heavens and nine realms together find cultivation and passage in the ultimate teaching.
