In the first year of the Longshuo era of the Great Tang, Guo Xingzhen, Daoist priest of Xihua Abbey in the capital and Court Gentleman for Miscellaneous Duties: Examining the two chapters of the *Daodejing*, there is nothing of slandering the Buddha; the sūtras of the Tripiṭaka do not recount the lineage of Li. Later students race in contention, trailing closely behind the Dharmarāja, while the intention of cultivating and venerating the Dharma is exalted beyond the ascendance to immortality. Therefore, with sincere devotion I respectfully recount: originally investigating the immortal scriptures, resting one's mind on the correct norm, how could it lie in breath circulation? The Three Registers and Three Primes were falsely established according to emotion; cinnabar writings and jade tallies were spoken following external things. The Qin and Han dynasties incurred ridicule on account of these; Luan Da and Xu Fu brought about their ruin relying on these. Therefore, giving up my heart and committing my resolve, I reverently copy and circulate them, hoping that all who see and hear will hold this intention.
