In the first year of the Longshuo era of the Tang, respectfully made by Guo Xingzhen, Grand Master for Court Discussion and Daoist priest of Xihua Abbey. For Laozi's teaching went no further than the flowing sands, whereas the lineage of the Lord Śākya has spread its transformation throughout the encircling oceans. Looking at the present day, the broad and the narrow can be known. Exhausting the spiritual and embodying the sacred is naturally without confusion. The intentional words of the two fascicles have not severed worldly defilements; the principles of the scriptures of the Tripiṭaka naturally reach the true utmost. Therefore, he takes refuge in the Right Awakened One and accepts the Supreme Vehicle, making Buddhas and copying scriptures to circulate among gentlemen and commoners. He vows that through the path of returning to the origin, spiritual clarity will be controlled along the heavenly highway; through the gate of dedication of merit, balance will be perfected at the axis of the earth. Thus the Celestial Master received the Dao yet constantly paid homage to the Buddha at Heming; the Hermit [Tao Hongjing] established respect and always bowed to Śākya on Mount Mao. As for the rest who are not yet awakened, their following of bad examples is [foolish]; on examining the Ascension to the Mystery, one must not adhere to it like ice.
