3.55

中書令岑文本。少信佛。誦法花經普門品。常乘船於吳江中。船壞人死文本亦沒水。聞有人言。但念佛必不死。如是三言。遂隨波出沒。須臾著岸云云。

Cen Wenben, Director of the Secretariat, believed in the Buddha from his youth and recited the Universal Gate Chapter of the Lotus Sūtra. Once, while traveling by boat on the Wu River, the boat broke apart and the passengers died; Wenben also sank into the water. He heard someone say: 'Just be mindful of the Buddha and you will surely not die.' After these words were spoken three times, he drifted up and down with the waves, and in a short while reached the shore, and so forth.
