During the Taikang era of Emperor Wu of the Jin, the śramaṇa Jīvaka was a person from the Western Regions. Floating across the sea on an eastward journey, he reached Xiangyang. Taking passage to cross northward, the ferrymen saw that the barbarian’s clothes were tattered and mean, and slighted him, refusing to take him aboard. By the time they reached the northern bank, Jīvaka had already arrived first. Two tigers with ears flattened followed him, and Jīvaka patted their heads. When people questioned him, he gave no answer. At the end of Emperor Hui’s reign, he arrived in Luoyang. He admonished the monks whose vestments and regalia were extravagant and who did not make the Buddhadharma their aim. Seeing the Luoyang palace, he said, 'The palace of the Trāyastriṃśa Heaven somewhat resembles this. Above there are twelve hundred implements; originally made by divine artisans, they ought to be completed by the power of the Way, yet you make them through the power of birth and death—is it not toilsome?' Seeing Zhi Fayuan, he said, 'A fine bodhisattva, come from among sheep.' Seeing Zhu Faxing, he said, 'A fine bodhisattva, come from among gods,' and so forth. He told people, 'The holy man is about to leave the capital.' He accepted all of the hundred million gifts offered, but on the verge of departure he sealed them and left them behind. He made eight hundred large banners, which were loaded onto camels to return west. He also said, 'This region will later create immense new sin; how lamentable!' When the Jin turmoil seethed like a boiling cauldron, these words proved unfailing. In Luoyang, after he had finished his meal, countless people saw him off. Jīvaka walked slowly, yet galloping horses could not catch up with him. Later, merchants coming from the west encountered him north of the Flowing Sands. Calculating the date, it was the very day he had first departed Luoyang. Estimating the distance he had traveled, it was perhaps beyond ten thousand li.
