In the early Jin, the śramaṇa Fotiao lived on Mount Chang. For many years his practice was pure and simple. Traveling alone in the mountain forests, he took shelter at night in a tiger's cave. There was heavy snow, and a tiger came and lay across the entrance before him. Tiao said, 'I have usurped your dwelling; how ashamed I am.' With his hand he brushed the snow from the tiger. The tiger flattened its ears and went down the mountain. Those accompanying him were terrified. He set the date of his own death, and bade farewell to those near and far, saying, 'Heaven and earth endure long, yet they still face ruin; how much more so for humans? If one can purge the three defilements, then this will be imperishable.' He then returned to his room, sat upright, and passed away. Several years later, lay disciples entered the mountains to cut wood, and saw Tiao on a crag, his clothes fresh and bright. Eight fellow companions asked in astonishment, 'Upādhyāya, are you still alive?' He replied, 'I am always alive.' He made full inquiries of old acquaintances, and after a good while departed. They then opened his grave, and did not find his corpse, and so forth.
