At the end of the Western Jin, Li Heng met a monk who said, 'Your good fortune is about to arrive, and after that misfortune will come. If you maintain poverty and do not serve in office, disaster will diminish and auspiciousness will arrive. If you wear the gold and purple seal-ribbons, hold office in up to three commanderies; if you stop at one commandery, it will be fine.' Heng was impetuous by nature and came from a humble family; he said, 'For now, wealth and honor—how could they lead to later disasters?' This monk stayed overnight, and when viewed at night, he filled the entire bed. Heng in fright called his family to look at him. He then transformed into a bird perching on the beam. At dawn, he resumed his form and departed. Heng saw him out, and suddenly he vanished. Because of this, [Heng] had faith in the Buddha, but still could not heed his words. Later, he became the Grand Administrator of Xiyang, Jiangxia, and Lujiang. During the Taixing era, in the rebellion of Qian Feng, he was executed. This monk's words were not mistaken, so it is said.
