Śramaṇa Shan Daokai was a native of Dunhuang. Leaving household life, he resided in the mountains, ingesting and practicing on pine needles and cypress resin for thirty years. Later, he swallowed only small pebbles and walked as swiftly as if flying. Disliking crowds and loving secluded tranquility, he stayed in Baohan for many years. During the time of Shi Hu, he came from Xiping, traveling seven hundred [li] a day. Upon arriving in Ye, he roamed the towns and countryside saving people from suffering. Whenever he acquired wealth, he immediately gave it away, traveling only on foot. When the Shi clan's rule was coming to an end, he came with his disciples to Jianye. He then went south to Mount Luofu, where he eventually died in a mountain cottage. Yuan Yanbo climbed the mountain during the Xingning era to pay reverence to his withered bones, and so forth.
