The śramaṇa Shan Daokai of the Western Jin was a man of Dunhuang. He went forth to live in the mountains, ingesting pine and cypress for thirty years. Later, he swallowed only small pebbles, and walked as if flying. He could not bear other people and delighted in secluded quiet. He stayed on Baofu Mountain for many years. In the time of Shi Hu, he came from Xiping, traveling seven hundred [li] a day. When he reached Ye, he traveled throughout the towns and countryside, saving those who suffered from afflictions. Whenever he received wealth, he immediately gave it away, traveling merely on foot. Toward the end of the Shi clan's rule, he came to Jianye with his disciples, and went south to Luofu, where he finally passed away in a mountain hut. During the Xingning era, Yuan Yanbo climbed the mountain and paid homage to his dried skeleton.
