Śramaṇa Liang Faxiang was a native of Hedong. He lived alone in the mountains, and wild animals grew tame around him. At the shrine of Mount Tai, there was a large stone casket used to store sacred relics. Faxiang spent the night at the shrine, where he saw a figure dressed in dark robes and a military cap, who commanded Faxiang to open the casket. The lid weighed thousands of pounds and by right could not be lifted alone; yet when he tested it by lifting, it was as light as a drifting feather. He then took the treasures and distributed them to the poor and destitute. Later, he crossed the Yangtze River and resided in Yuecheng Temple. Suddenly, he began wandering without restraint, playing the part of a jester and acting impetuously. Sima Tian, General of the Guard of the North, detested his lack of restraint, invited him, and poisoned his wine. Faxiang emptied three cups in succession, yet his countenance remained completely composed. He passed away at the age of ninety, at the end of the Yuanxing era.
