The śramaṇa Cup Crosser (Beidu) came from an unknown origin; like the one mentioned previously, he was a Daoist ascetic of Penglai. He was first seen in Jizhou at about seventy years of age. Concealing his true name, he did not observe minor rules of conduct, and ordinary people held him in low regard. Once, he sought lodging for the night with a family that possessed a golden image. Cup Crosser took it and left. The host pursued him on horseback, yet Cup Crosser walked along at his normal leisurely pace, and the horseman could not catch him. Arriving at a river, he placed a small cup on the water, stepped onto it with one foot, and crossed over dancing with joy; hence he was called 'Cup Crosser'. At that time in Pengcheng, he would travel carrying a bamboo basket. When attending a feast at mealtime, he would place the basket directly in the way. The monks, annoyed that it blocked their passage, tried to move it, but it would not budge. Once the meal was finished, he picked it up and walked away, unobstructed. He died south of the Yangtze River during the Yongchu era. When Kumārajīva heard that Cup Crosser was in Pengcheng, he remarked, 'I parted with this fellow playfully several hundred years ago. How is it that after he crossed south, we never met?' and so forth.
