Guṇavarman was a native of the Western Regions. At the beginning of the Song dynasty, he traveled to the capital, Yangzhou, where he converted many. People of the time all believed him to be an attained saint. Flowers were strewn beneath the seats: under all other monks the flowers withered, yet under Guṇavarman alone they remained fresh and immaculate. When he passed away, he sat upright with folded hands; some thought he had entered deep meditation, as he did not rise for many days. Beneath his mat, a farewell verse of more than thirty lines was found, stating that he had attained the second fruit [of the śramaṇa]. On the night of his demise, more than two hundred people assembled, and all saw an object about a bolt of cloth in length circle his corpse and depart toward the southwest, and so forth.
