Śramaṇa Daojiong belonged to the Ma clan of Fufeng and was a learned scholar. In the second year of the Yuanjia era, he held a Samantabhadra retreat in Luoyang, attended by more than forty clergy and laity. After seven days, during the midday meal, a person dressed in coarse woolen cloth was suddenly seen entering on horseback before the hall. Dismounting, he bowed to the Buddha. Assuming he was an ordinary person, they did not show him special reverence. He then mounted his horse, brandished his whip, and vanished without a trace, leaving only a red light illuminating the sky, which dissipated only after a long while. At the end of the third year following, Daojiong held the Samantabhadra retreat again. On the final day, two monks arrived; their appearance and robes seemed ordinary. They came straight in, bowed to the Buddha, and exited. When someone sensed their distinctiveness and went out the gate to see them off, they suddenly saw them flying straight up into the sky, and the monks' whereabouts were lost.
