In the fifteenth year of the Yuanjia era of the Song dynasty, Liu Ningzhi of Nanjun lived in seclusion on Mount Heng and would not emerge when summoned. He adhered to the Way of the Five Pecks of Rice and did not believe in the Buddha-Dharma. He dreamed of a person several zhang above the ground who said, 'Your doubts are now resolved.' Upon waking, he suddenly came to realization. Day and night he diligently paid homage to the Buddha for half a year. Suddenly, he saw a purple light beneath his forehead; at the place of the auspicious light, he obtained two śarīra. Cleaving and striking did not damage them, and when floated in water, light came forth. Later, while eating, one was pressed against his tooth and spat out, emitting light. His wife and child obtained another one, making five in all. Later they were lost again, but soon retrieved once more.
