The above princes of the Song dynasty all possessed literary elegance and deeply studied Buddhist scriptures. Every month on the six fast days, they personally observed the eight precepts. Dedicated to the cultivation of literary refinement, Yiqing was the most superior. His unceasing eloquence was inexhaustible, radiant as the morning glow and bright as the sun; pouring like a hanging river without ending, scattering like rain and flying like mist. He had all the ladies within his quarters cultivate the precepts, and had the officers and soldiers under his command chant the sūtras. He authored the Xuan yan ji (Records of Proclaimed Proofs) praising and recounting the Three Jewels.
