梁侍中尚書左僕射中衛將軍特進右光祿簡肅子徐勉。溫雅夙聞。珪璋早著。明堂曲臺之典。左夏韓益之書。風飛焱竪之文。淹中稷下之學。龍宮半珠之道。鷲山華水之卷。莫不窮源盡奧。遞為留心。

Xu Mian, Viscount Jiansu, Palace Attendant, Left Supervisor of the Department of State Affairs, General of the Central Guard, Specially Advanced, and Grand Master of the Household on the Right under the Liang: his warmth and elegance were long renowned, his gem-like virtue early recognised. From the canons of the Mingtang and the Qutai, to the texts of Zuo, Xia, Han, and Yi, the soaring writings of wind and flame, the studies of Yanzhong and Jixia, the half-pearl doctrine of the Dragon Palace, and the scrolls of Vulture Peak and Flower River—there was none of whose sources he did not reach and whose profundity he did not plumb, devoting his mind to each in turn.
