Emperor Daowu, the Grand Ancestor of the Northern Wei (taboo name Gui): His reign met with bereavement and turmoil, and the realm fell into ruin. The living people did not see the forms of sacrificial vessels; the common folk continually beheld the tracks of war horses. Ritual, music, and literary culture were almost completely swept away. The Grand Ancestor, with heroic and exceptional natural gifts and embracing the refined forbearance of a great sovereign, pacified the northern steppes and took complete possession of the central plains. He brightly revealed the radiant glory [of the Dharma], which silently influenced daily life. In the first year of the Tianxing reign era, he issued an edict stating: 'The flourishing of the Buddha-Dharma has existed since ancient times.' In the capital, he constructed and adorned sacred statues and restored monasteries and lodgings. Moreover, in the lands of Yu and Guo, he built a fifteen-story pagoda, and established the two temples of Kaitai and Dinguo. He had all the scriptures copied, cast a thousand-catty statue, and summoned three hundred famous monks to hold Dharma assemblies every month.
