Emperor Xuanwu, the World Predecessor of the Wei (taboo name Ke): In the Shiqian Hall, he expounded the Vimalakīrtinirdeśa Sūtra for the monks and court officials. Joy and anger were never revealed in his face; he had a refined love for the classics and histories, and was particularly skilled in the teachings of Śākya. Possessing fine manners and a handsome countenance, his virtue matched yin and yang, and his brightness equaled the sun and moon. He spread civil teaching to cherish distant peoples, and adjusted ritual and music to honor the outstanding and accomplished. In the region of the Three Rivers and Six Commanderies, around the area of the Jing, Wei, Ba, and Chan rivers, he constructed four temples, including Putong and Dading, providing for one thousand monks skilled in the three trainings.
