The *Record of Wu* says: The King of Wu asked Senghui, 'In what way does the Buddha-Dharma differ from worldly ways?' He answered, 'Those who do evil in the open are punished by men; those who do evil in secret are punished by spirits. The *Book of Changes* says: "A house that heaps good deeds will surely have surplus joy"; the *Book of Odes* sings: "Seek blessings without turning aside." Although these are standard maxims of Confucian and worldly traditions, they are also the gradual instructions of the Buddha-Dharma.'
