The External Argument says: In establishing models, Lord Lao valued only filial piety and loyalty; in saving the world and delivering people, he exercised utmost compassion and utmost love. Thus his teaching has been transmitted forever, unchanged by a hundred kings; the mysterious breeze has long prevailed, without deviation through myriad ages. Therefore, it is a constant exemplar for governing the state and regulating the family. The Buddhist teaching abandons righteousness and abandons kin, being unbenevolent and unfilial. When King Ajātaśatru killed his father, he was conversely declared blameless; when Devadatta shot at his elder brother, we hear of no punishment. Using this to guide ordinary people only increases their wickedness; employing this to model the world, how could it produce goodness? This is the tenth difference, regarding compliance and rebellion.
