The External Treatise states: Rites and righteousness are the wondrous instructions that perfect virtue; loyalty and filial piety are the roots of conduct that establish the person. Never has it been seen that subjects and commoners lost the rites and their state could survive, or that sons and grandsons were unfilial and their family could stand. Now Gautama established regulations mandating that clothes must resemble barbarian dress, whereupon one becomes a teacher among men; that the mouth must chant barbarian words, whereupon one becomes noble in the world. This causes rascal fellows to be rebellious on this basis, sitting cross-legged above their fathers and elder brothers and styling themselves 'monks'; standing haughtily before their lords and kings and calling themselves 'Śākya clan'. Being unbenevolent and unfilial is already manifest in the family; lacking joy and respect is furthermore revealed in the state.
