道教在中國。使人清虛以自守。卑弱以自持。一洗紛紜轇轕之習。而歸於靜默無為之境。其有裨於世教也至矣。故梁武帝欲除道。而道終不可除。

As for Daoism in China, it causes people to preserve themselves in purity and emptiness, and sustain themselves in humility and pliancy; to wash away the habits of turbulence and entanglement entirely, and return to the realm of silence and non-action. Its benefit to the instruction of the world is utmost indeed. Therefore, though Emperor Wu of Liang sought to abolish Daoism, in the end Daoism could not be abolished.
