由根有大小。而性有厚薄（上根人意氣高遠。下根人意氣微劣。故有大小厚薄之分）。

Because capacities have great and small, natures have thick and thin. (Those of superior capacity have high and far-reaching spirits, while those of inferior capacity have faint and weak spirits; thus there is the distinction between great and small, thick and thin.)
