予昔嘗與子為方外友（予我也。昔者往日也。嘗曾也。撤去籓籬出乎流俗之表曰方外也。同志曰友）。

In former days I was once your friend beyond the mundane world. ('I' [yu] means me. 'Former' means past days. 'Once' means formerly. Stepping beyond fences and transcending worldly vulgarity is called 'beyond the mundane world' [fangwai]. Those of shared aspirations are called 'friends'.)
