瞽臾生於中夏而頑嚚（瞽臾舜父。心不行先王德義之則。為頑。舜繼母。口不道忠信之言。為嚚）。

Gu Sou was born in the central lands of the Xia and yet was obstinate and deceitful. (Gu Sou was Shun's father. Because his mind did not follow the model of the former kings' virtue and righteousness, he was called obstinate. Shun's stepmother, because her mouth spoke no loyal or trustworthy words, was called deceitful.)
