If clothing and food are insufficient, the endeavors of the Way will end up abandoned (a common proverb says: "Man has no roots; water and food are his life." Gǒu means "truly"; truly, if a person has no clothing and food, his body and life will surely be cut off; once the body and life are cut off, how could the endeavors of the Way not be abandoned?).
