The imperial carriage came and went without being exposed to wind and rain. Its grandeur and vast splendor were as great as this! He only knew how to indulge the desires of his ears and eyes, and did not know the weariness and suffering of working the people. He merely indulged in haughty extravagance and failed to cultivate the state's governance. Did this not destroy his state? What else could it do? Now, though we śramaṇas dwell in splendid halls and navy-blue sanctuaries, we only use the morning bell and evening chanting, the distant breeze and the sparse sounding-stone, to extol the golden words and generate blessings for humans and devas. (Now, though we śramaṇas dwell in such [places], we only use the morning bell and evening drum to raise and chant the Buddhist hymns; above, to pray for the holy longevity of the august sovereign, and below, to pray for blessings for the common people forever, propagating moral transformation.)
