3.62

天子莫得而臣。王侯莫得而友（禮記。儒行篇曰。儒有上不臣天子。下不事諸侯。莊子。天道篇曰。曾子居衛。天子不得臣。諸侯不得反。故養志者忘形。養形者忘利。致道忘心矣）。

whom the Son of Heaven could not make subjects, and whom kings and marquises could not make friends; (The 'Conduct of the Scholar' chapter in the Liji says: 'The scholar above does not serve the Son of Heaven, and below does not serve the feudal lords.' The 'Way of Heaven' chapter in the Zhuangzi says: 'When Zengzi lived in Wei, the Son of Heaven could not make him a subject, and the feudal lords could not make him a friend.' Thus those who nourish their aspiration forget their physical form; those who nourish their form forget profit; and those who reach the Way forget their minds.)
