Therefore Confucius said, ''Ritual,' they say, 'ritual!' Does it mean jade and silk? 'Music,' they say, 'music!' Does it mean bells and drums?' (To express reverence through jade and silk is ritual; to express harmony through bells and drums is music. If one abandons the root and focuses exclusively on the branches, how could that be called ritual and music?)
