此兒非我有　野父聚落母
共合生兒子　非烏復非鷄
若欲學公聲　復是鷄所生
若欲學母鳴　其父復是烏
學烏似鷄鳴　學鷄作烏聲
烏鷄若兼學　是二俱不成

"This child does not belong to me alone: / A wild father, a village mother; / Mating together, they bore this child, / Neither a crow nor a chicken. / If it wishes to learn its father's voice, / Yet it was born of a hen; / If it wishes to learn its mother's cry, / Its father is yet a crow. / Learning to be a crow, it sounds like a hen's cry; / Learning to be a chicken, it makes a crow's call. / If it tries to learn both crow and chicken, / Neither of the two is achieved."
