The nāga king Sāgara dwells at the bottom of the great ocean north of Mount Sumeru. His palace grounds measure eighty thousand yojanas in length and breadth. They are made of the seven jewels, with seven tiers of walls; balustrades and netting adorn the top. There are groves, gardens, and bathing pools where various birds sing in harmony; walls of gold and gates of silver, the gates being two thousand four hundred li high and two thousand two hundred li wide, finely decorated with colored paintings. He is constantly guarded by five hundred spirits. He can make rain fall according to his wish, which no other flock of nāgas can match. The abyss where he dwells surges and flows into the sea, bearing the color of blue vaiḍūrya. (Extracted from the Loutan jing and the Avataṃsaka Sūtra).
