The Abhiniṣkramaṇa-sūtra says: At that time, from Channa's side, the prince sought and took a knife adorned with various mani jewels and the seven treasures. Taking the knife with his own right hand, he drew it from the sheath, and immediately with his left hand grasped his hair, which was twisted in curls of the dark-blue colour of utpala lotuses. With his right hand, holding the sharp knife himself, he cut it off. Raising it with his right hand, he tossed it into the air. At that time, with a mind struck by rarity, Śakra Devendra gave rise to great joy. He caught the prince's topknot so that it would not fall, receiving it in wondrous heavenly garments. At that time, all the devas made offerings to it with their supreme heavenly offerings. At that time, the assembly of devas from the Śuddhāvāsa heaven was neither near nor far from the prince. There was a garland called sumana. Beneath that sumana garland, [a deva] transformed himself into a tonsurer, who stood holding a sharp razor. The prince said to the tonsurer, 'Can you shave my hair or not?' The tonsurer answered the prince, saying, 'Indeed I can.' He then shaved his head with the sharp knife. At that time, Śakra Devendra gave rise to a mind struck by rarity; of the falling hair, he did not let a single strand tumble to the ground. Every single one he caught with heavenly garments, and brought them toward the Heaven of the Thirty-Three to make offerings to them. The crest-knot relic of the Bodhisattva's hair topknot has continued without interruption to this day.
